A wedding planner is one of the few vendors you hire as a person, not a product. You’ll trust them for a year or more with the budget, the vendors and the single most important day you’re planning. So the questions that matter aren’t really about competence — most experienced planners are competent. They’re about fit.
Here’s what to ask, grouped by what you’re really trying to learn.
About fit
- How many weddings do you take on a year? You want to know you won’t be one of forty.
- Will I work with you personally, or a team? Neither is wrong — but you should know who’s actually on the end of the phone.
- What kind of weddings do you love most? Listen for whether they light up at something that sounds like yours.
- How would you approach the wedding I’m imagining? The best answer is a question back: a planner who’s curious about you.
About process
- How do you handle the budget — and what happens if we go over?
- How and how often will we communicate?
- How do you choose and manage vendors?
- What does your role look like on the wedding day itself? (See planner vs coordinator for why this answer matters.)
About pricing
- How do you charge — flat fee, percentage, or packages?
- What exactly is included at each level?
- When are payments due?
- Do you ever take commissions from vendors? Transparency here tells you a lot. (Our rough cost ranges by planning level are a useful reference before this conversation.)
About the day
- Who’s my point of contact on the day?
- How do you handle things going wrong — weather, a late vendor, a family moment?
- How do you make sure we actually enjoy our own wedding?
The answer behind the answers
Notice how they respond as much as what they say. Do they ask about you, or only talk about themselves? Do they describe the kind of wedding you want, or the kind they want to make? A planner is a year-long relationship. Taste, personality and communication matter as much as the portfolio.
That’s why Wedded is built around a meeting, not a listing. We read what you tell us, introduce you to the planner we think fits, and you meet them before anything is signed. Tell us about your wedding to start — or browse the planners first.
